ORTHODONTICS

Orthodontics is a branch of stomatology that is concerned with the treatment and prevention of malocclusions and abnormal arrangement of teeth.

Depending on the problem, orthodontic treatment can be carried out either by means of a removable orthodontic appliance (removable braces) or fixed orthodontic appliance fixed braces). The treatment is recommended for both children and teenagers, as well as adults. In some cases, before commencing with the treatment it is necessary to extract some deciduous or permanent teeth.

During the first visit, the orthodontist takes impressions which are then used to prepare models made from gypsum. These enable the doctor to precisely and accurately measure the patient's teeth. In order to make a full diagnosis, the doctor also needs X-ray pictures: teleradiogram and orthopantomogram. Orthodontic treatment usually takes around 2 years. During this time, in order to get the best results, the patient needs to visit the doctor regularly (every 4-6 weeks) so that the doctor can control the treatment and adjust the orthodontic appliance depending on the changes.

After the orthodontic treatment has been completed, the so-called retention treatment is necessary, the aim of which is to assure teeth stay in the desired position. During this period of time, the stomatognatic system "gets used to the new situation".

Getting the best final results in terms of aesthetics, functions and stability is possible only if the patient's needs have been thoroughly analysed. Orthodontic treatment is an indispensable element of this kind of attitude towards dentistry.
